4 Tips for Mastering Your Thick HairApril 29, 2020
With the bounce, volume, and knack of making almost any style work, there’s plenty to love about thick hair. It doesn’t stop there though. Everyone’s familiar with the advantages of thick hair, but if you’ve ever come up against a fuller mane you know there’s a lot more to it than that. Dealing with thick hair harder than it seems and comes with its own set of problems. Maintaining healthy, strong hair at that volume isn’t easy and any damage will be quick to show. Having trouble managing your thick hair? Discover how you can tame that unruly mane!
1. Pass on washing a few times a week – It feels counterintuitive, but foregoing the shampoo 3-4 days a week gives the natural oils in your hair more time to work. Overshowering dries out your scalp causing dandruff and more unmanageable hair. Instead, start by skipping the shampoo every other day and build your way up from there until you find the perfect balance of time between washes. And if your hair looks a little greasy, don’t worry! Dry shampoo fixes that in seconds. Just a few spritzes is all it takes to soak up excess oil on one of your “off” days.
2. Brushing – Thick textured hair doesn’t look incredibly gorgeous on its own. There’s a lot of work that goes into it. Full tresses can be a daily struggle comb. More hair, more problems, and nothing proves that better than the huge knots. A good product will ease strong tangles but the key to really powering through these messy snags is the proper hairbrush. Pay attention to the details with bristles brushes as nylon with fight through even the stubbornest hair and natural boar bristles reduce frizz.
3. Take the time to air dry – Blow dryers give us so much convenience, especially when you need to dry your hair quickly, however they are often the enemy of thick healthy locks. Since the heat weakens the hair, breakage and damage happen more frequently. Instead of putting your tresses under the stress, take the time to air dry all the way or wait until your hair is only slightly damp and blow-dry the rest of the way. Don’t skip your heat protectant either when you’re about to use a hairdryer either to make sure you aren’t hurting your thick mane.
4. Frizz control – Frizz is par for the course with thick hair, but you don’t have to live with it. Even if you feel like sleek, frizz-free hair is out of the question, here are a couple of times to tame your full locks. First off, get yourself a proven deep conditioner that smooths thick coarse strands and flattens frizz. Seeing your stylist regularly is another way to beat frizzy tresses. Trimming your hair and cutting away split ends is known to reduce frizz and strengthens the follicles.
